ON THE DAY YOU CLIMB DOWN * yr head's in the clouds/with all the words you've spoken/ & I'm down here on the ground/where all you've touched is broken - there'll come a time when I will disown you/yr head's in the clouds with nothing to hold you ... * I want to know just who on earth do you think you are - I want to know just what you'll do when I walk away, on that nearing day : the day you climb down . * all you ever do is talk about it - yr just looking thru me/& you avoid it/ there'll come a time when I will disown you, & yr rose coloured eyes will darken - just as mine did . * I want to know just who on earth do you think you are - I want to know just what you'll do when I walk away, on that nearing day : the day you climb down .
2.
Snow Rages 06:36
SNOW RAGES * the white snow rages, fills every space/tears to my thoughts - sobs to my words/some melting echoes, lives that I dream are touched like a river/with tears to my thoughts . * this night's breathing beauty to me/snow rages all the world/ falls as a sea, kindling failing flowers & leaves evergreen/ to shimmer in silver snow dropping free ... * & I believe you never leave/you never die/yr never too far away/ for you live/you have life/you have it here in my heart/ as I live & as I breathe & as I swear upon this meeting place/ it's always love/its always here/you can never leave my thoughts - tears to my thoughts . * downpour white diamonds, stones of a rain/ stunning shining their dazzling ways are hauling me over - I'm making to laugh/loving these senses/ some fears are unmasked/ and they're cast down at last ... * & I believe that you never leave ... * this night is breathing loving to me/ snow rages me away in music so sweet/ some flashing melody elusive & brief is touched like a river/ running in me/singing you & me . * & I believe that you never leave ...
3.
CITY ALL OF STRANGERS * the night has fallen here & I need not say amen & sleep comes as it will & I shall not tire till then * I shall leave behind all that leaves me blinded - forget it, & renew me - I love it here newly in this city, all of strangers ... *& I can't take in all I've been told about dirt & noise & the harsh lights that waste ... for all this city's a blank page to write on/for me to use & to come to know the place . * for I won't be fallen here & i won't be underwhelmed should the city dwarf my steps ah then I am not honest with myself - this is made to be mine & other other strangers likewise embrace it & use it I love it here - newly in this city, all of strangers .
4.
Little Days 03:02
LITTLE DAYS * & I have come to look to you in the eye/in time I'll come to realise why/torn from my sight/flung to the arms of where you're looking like you'll never cry again . * oh but I feel we've only run wide/oh & I want you to pierce my eyes, tell me I'm alive in the only eyes that see/that I am in the only eyes that ever mattered to me . * you take the love back/say those were little days, little days of lack - nothing to you/you'll take the love back/speak with a bitter taste/ say those were little days - & it sounds too cruel when you say it . * tho you may feel safe & sound on yr own/ah you must know that when you disown/all that seems sour/you give up any hope/ & you forsake all the good & the simple love that'd grow .
5.
YOUR JEWLED FOOTSTEPS * I'm not scared to try it/I'll take it there as I find it/ I'm not scared to up & go/no, I'm not scared to follow in yr jewled footsteps caus' you've been there - you've been there/ you help me get behind it/i'm not scared to try it . * I'm not scared to try it/for I really don't care to live out a lie, to be so insincere/& I'm too scared to stay where I'll wind up dead/ it blocks my head, makes me afraid . * but I'm not scared/to walk where so many have tried & failed there/ no I'm not scared, for fear's sake/for fear of knowing heartbreak - for yr jewled footsteps show where I'll walk can be safe/ its just a matter of trusting in some blind faith - it just is .
6.
FOR LOVE, WAITING TO DIE * summer gone, sleepy dust tired & dark mornings for love waiting to die faded green/stolen time blind & lost seasons for love waiting to die night-restless ways broken wings flowers of sorrow for love waiting to die silent lips a haunted moon a rosary breaking for love waiting to die . * I am not choosing to bring this in greeting I do not choose to loose this life - I will bring tears to there I will bring rain to there to love, waiting to die I will bring since back I will bring empty hands to love waiting to die . * murmured echoes lulling cries velvet nights shrouding for love waiting to die escaping ships pale horizon lights muted evenings for love waiting to die retreating shade dreams of running eye-tired awakenings for love waiting to die farther places tastes of wintering days that erase us for love waiting to die .
7.
SHUTTERED NIGHTS * these shuttered nights i'm just my own prisoner - so wild with desire for a view of taller skies, studded with diamond eyes - for all of the length & the breadth of the view . * i've built all of love upon that viewpoint, i've put all the love i've had - & I can't see it coming back . I've put all of love upon that viewpoint - & now I'm the only man these shuttered nights hide ... * & I am waiting, shall you save me? ... I'm lost around the ways to give, I'm lost around the way to love ... I am waiting - will you raise me high? - I am somewhere shuttered here, I am someone waiting where I'm lost around the way to love my ways - these shuttered nights . * these shuttered nights I'm prey to a stranger who robs me because he knows me well - he'll realise I'm so out of range I will hardly be able to tell . * 'caus i've built all love on this high viewpoint - Ive put all the love I've had & I can't see it coming back . I've put all of love upon this viewpoint - I've put all the love I've had & now I'm the only man these shuttered nights hide ... * I am waiting - shall you save me? ... I'm lost around the ways to give, I'm lost around the way to love ... I am waiting - will you raise me high? I am somewhere shuttered here - I am someone waiting where I'm lost around the way to love my ways - these shuttered nights .

FIRST & LAST FEBRUARY * you were that man so blue & slow, walking like poetry/ with a whistle that brought the world to heel/a mine of love for me . * strong as the face of autumn leaves/blowing the breeze too free/ but it didn't matter none, I dig that mine of love for me - that mine of love's for me . * that february, the first & last time when the world tore you down my friend - that february - you let me look in you & I saw you born anew - afraid of loving me . *ah, meet me tonight in dreams to be tumbling in the streets/ with lives of a laughing tangled soul/ a mine of love for me - you'll look like a sun - too harsh too watch/ but you'll do it joyfully - so torn on the world you couldn't dig that mine of love for me - that mine of love was for me . * that february - the first & last time when the world tore you down my friend/ that february - you let me look in you/ & I saw you born anew - afraid of loving me .
9.
THIS ONE REFRAIN * I was the thief/stealing such sweet lingering themes/ robbing the towering fragrance we loved, that we loved to be/ that we loved to dream/plundering all the we dreamed upon . * with laughter like spite/& malice like wire/to choke our desire/ to bereave all that we longed to be . * but, I shall keep all that we dreamed/ lost to the sweet heady overpowering fragrance once loved - in spite of the thief who would bring us to grief/ we'll drink in desire that encloses us ... * In rapture to rise/to dream in one cry/to dream all of life/ to be all that we could ever dream . & I'd wait forever to taste it again/i'd wait forever to try/ i'd wait forever with this one refrain to speak for me all of my life . & I can heal every defeat/ & I can make every wrong that I've done come to light/ to unstop my eyes/ so I can see how to cry/ to purify all I've been guilty of ... * with laughter so high it'll drown any crying/ & drink in desire/it'll be all that we've longed to be ... & I will heal every defeat - & l'll make right every wrong that I've done in your eyes .
10.
I'LL WRAP YOUR HOPES UP * I recall something said long ago ... you were sleeping, dreaming for love : "I'm made of a danger I hardly know - & I live alone there, always alone ... I'll wrap yr hopes up/ I will be the one to make you sad - & tho it dismays me, I will crush your love ... * take a day/ take some road/ back away/ for I move like a snake, closer each day - I'm made of a danger /that I hardly know/ & I live alone there/ always alone ... I'll wrap yr hopes up/ I will be the one to make you sad - & tho it dismays me, I will crush your love".

about

* The 2nd album of songs/impressions from my European sojourn/adventure. With help from friends old and new, this was a step away from the one-man with acoustic approach that formed the backbone of LOVE SMASHED ON A ROCK.

"HERE, from 1989 is a review from MELODY MAKER, written by Bob Stanley ...
WHEN Richard Brautigan, probably the greatest American writer of the last 30 years, died in 1984, all the obituaries could find to say about him was “The Beatles were fans of his”. Praise by association must be niggling Martyn Bates these days, as one half of Eyeless In Gaza who produced at least two stellar albums in the early Eighties, but are now chiefly remembered for writing a song that The Pale Saints named themselves after.

Last year’s “Love Smashed On A Rock” saw Bates on his best form for some while, a collection of magical folk-based love songs that became a much fawned-over item in Belgium, Germany and parts of darkest Croydon. On “Letters To A Scattered Family” Martyn has stuck with the same producer, Paul Sampson of Primitives fame, and taken the best part of “Love Smashed”, twisted and distorted them, and come up with something seven times better. This time the folk undercoat has been overlaid with a mixture of musical styles so varied it’s positively schizophrenic.

The troubadour approach is still evident of much of “Letters”; “City All Of Strangers” is straight from “Parsley Sage Rosemary And Thyme”, while “For Love, Waiting To Die” lightens the downbeat lyric with some singularly pretty Christmas bells. Elsewhere it’s a very different story, “Snow Rages” is huge, a six-and-a-half minute opus with shifting tectonic plates of phased guitars, psychotic harmonica, and an Oriental music box of a verse. “Your Jewelled Footsteps” is more bizarre still: a pneumatic drill rhythm section lurks beneath a looming black cloud of a melody that mutates into a chorus reminiscent of Paul Anka’s “Diana”. The most incredible thing about this juxtaposing of musical genre and instruments as diverse as clarinet, banjo and feedback is that it works.

Two things hold the songs in place. Sampson’s production on the last LP tended towards black and white passages of apocalyptic guitar not always sitting easily alongside pitterpat acoustics, but on “Letters” he’s blurred the edges, softened the joins so that the pieces fall perfectly into place. Secondly there‘s Martyn Bates’ voice while far removed from the sandpaper-in-the-brain wailing of early Eyeless it’s still remarkably intense, a compelling instrument. Simply, it oozes emotion.

Martyn Bates has carved himself a niche in music so distinctive yet so out on a limb that it’s hard to pinpoint who “Letters To A Scattered Family” will appeal to, There are links with masters like Tim Buckley and Laura Nyro, possibly “Wilder” period Cope, obvious elements of Eyeless In Gaza. But on a song as moonstruck, melodic and moving as “I’ll Wrap Your Hopes” there are no comparisons necessary. The Pale Saints are fans. So am I, and you need this record".
